DEB FILLER
Internationally Acclaimed Writer/Performer
Has worked as an actor, writer and
comedian internationally. In the past three years has been
playwright-in-residence at several theatre companies including
the Adirondak Theatre Festival, guest playwright Buddies In
Bad Times Theatre and is an ongoing member of the Usual Suspects
Playwrights Lab at New York Theatre Workshop. Currently developing
a new show called FUNNY MONEY, another on global warming and
a musical, as well as writing a book, Filler Up!
Food on a Schtick. - Recipes and Stories from a South Pacific
Jewish Family. She is also writing a screenplay
adaptation of FILLER UP!
for film and television to be made by Francine Zuckerman.
Deb is currently working on a new show, tentatively titled,
"It Only Hurts When I Laugh". This
effort is an homage to Jewish comics (Groucho Marx, Sid Caesar,
Jack Benny, Myron Cohen, Bette Midler, Sophie Tucker, etc.).
Deb
is the voice of the Peg Bundy doll and "Mummy" in
the award winning animated series, BOB AND MARGARET.
Contributing writer in DAUGHTERS OF ABSENCE, edited
by Mindy Weisel. Has worked on numerous productions as co-writer,
and frequently tours stand up shows as well as emceeing favourite
charities.
FILLER
UP! workshopped in New Zealand at the Wellington
Fringe 2000, at Rhubarb! Festival in NY, Theatre J Washington,
Gloucester Theatre Company and Centre Stage, Harrisburg and
at the Assembly Rooms in Edinburgh. World Premiere of the
show at Drill Hall Theatre, London 2003 to a sell out run.
Equally successful runs in Toronto, Berlin, Auckland, and the U.S. (Alexandria,
VA) and a successful return to London, U.K. Upcoming in 2005 - a
tour of the U.K, seasons in the U.S. and Australia, and
a Backer's Audition in New York City.
First
workshopped her last solo show, PUNCH
ME IN THE STOMACH, co-written with Alison Summers,
at La Mama Theatre in New York and toured to the Adelaide
Festival, and the New Zealand International Festival of the
Arts, where she won 'Critics' Pick'.
PUNCH ME IN THE STOMACH opened off-Broadway at the
New York Theatre Workshop in 1992 and has toured internationally
for ten years. It opened New York's Jewish Museum's refurbished
theatre and the new Hong Kong Theatre for the Arts. An ABC
documentary, ANGST, filmed it in Australia, New York, and
New Zealand. Documentary filmaker and director Francine Zuckerman then
adapted it into a feature film, which toured theatrically
and was later screened on television internationally.
Studied
theatre in New York with Stella Adler, Uta Hagen and Deborah
Hedwall. Off-Broadway debut in a musical comedy based on the
life of singer Sophie Tucker. Performed in Europe with various
theatre companies. First one-woman show named 'Pick of the
Fringe Festivals' by the CBC, Canada. Performed at various
80's New York downtown cabaret spaces alongside John Leguizamo,
Blue Man Group, etc. Featured artist at the 'Gusto House Cabaret'
chosen to play the 1990 Edinburgh Festival. A tour of the
U.K. followed. Lead singer in several rock and roll bands
and founding member of "The Ratz" and "Debbie
and the Dum Dums," during the late 1970¹s, two celebrated
New Zealand punk cabaret groups.
